A recent audit conducted by Lync Software, provided an alarming insight into the scale of exposure within just one enterprise. The detailed exercise used the LyncRMS Discover & Audit – Removable Media software to monitor the degree of network activity by removable media devices within the otherwise highly secured computer environment.

This is what the audit revealed.

  • 39% of users connected a USB device
  • 154 different types of devices were connected
  • 1,805 files were transferred between the network and the devices

 

And more alarmingly, the following types of files were transferred between the devices and networks.

  • 1093 images were transferred, most likely personal photo’s and other graphic that take up valuable server space.
  • 28 system files that are potentially detrimental to the integrity of the server and pc’s
